PSP Featured at Wal-Mart's Sustainability Summit
October 25, 2007
At the October 10th Sustainability Summit in Bentonville, Arkansas, Executives from ACT NOW and Wal-Mart shared a break-out session to highlight the Personal Sustainability Project (PSP). Judah Schiller, Executive VP at ACT NOW, hosted the session and was joined by Adam Werbach, ACT NOW CEO and Founder, and a panel of Wal-Mart Executives and Associates that played an integral role in Wal-Mart's nation-wide PSP roll-out: Linda Dillman, EVP, Risk, Benefits and Sustainability, Celia Swanson, EVP of Change Management, and Janelle Kearsley, Director Corp. Strategy/Sustainability.
The session began with a handful of Wal-Mart Associates who shared how the Personal Sustainability Practice has impacted their lives. Jason, an hourly Associate from Network Operations, whose PSP is, "to eat healthier and exercise," has resulted in shedding over 20 pounds and introducing healthier eating habits for his entire family. James, a Coordinator in the Logistics Department, shared the significant savings in his electric bill resulting from his switch to CFLs throughout his home.
Schiller presented a design overview of PSP, highlighting the positive HR impact visible at Wal-Mart since its nationwide implementation of the project: Over half a million Wal-Mart Associates have adopted a Personal Sustainability Practice. Associates who have chosen a PSP feel that morale has improved, largely in part to the active role they are taking to help Wal-Mart achieve its ambitious sustainability initiatives. Dillman, Swanson, and Kearsley further highlighted the successes Wal-Mart has experienced in approaching sustainability from an HR perspective: Since enrolling in the PSP, Associates are more concerned about energy conservation, clean air and water, waste reduction, and health and wellness; additionally, Associates feel more strongly that they have a reason to connect with customers regarding issues of sustainability.
